We have supercomputers at our fingertips, and yet more often than not we can’t get them to do what we want. Products optimize user behavior, rather than the other way around. There’s no one this affects more than people with disabilities– from incompatible game controllers to unstructured content, we can and must do a much better job of designing our computing systems. Bansen Labs is developing a new platform that puts people at the center, enabling local-first, user-centered control of technology and data. A few of our inspirations include Bret Victor, Alan Kay, Ink & Switch, and the Handmade Network. We’re looking for an experienced engineer to lead the implementation of our production software platform. This is a unique opportunity to hack on an innovative system architecture with high immediate impact for end users. We are looking for someone who has:- Atom-to-pixel understanding of modern computing systems- Experience developing and shipping real-time user interactive products or open source platforms (e.g. game engines, robotics visualizations)- Advanced systems programming proficiency (e.g. C/C++/Rust/Zig, compiler toolchains, graphics pipeline, OS integration, networking, databases)- Familiarity with a broad range of programming models- Keen sense of user experience in system design Relevant interests include:- Accessibility and assistive technology- P2P protocols and architectures- Real-time collaboration algorithms- Object-capability model- Incremental compilers- Modern web platform (canvas rendering, cross-platform design, WASM, WebGPU)- Control systems- Metaobject protocols- Programming language design- End user programming- Interest in computing history and understandable computing (e.g. Bret Victor, Alan Kay)- Frustration with Web 2.0 models If this sounds like an interesting challenge, we’d love to hear from you.
